The first apartment was a full functional one-bedder hidden in a traditional Shanghainese “Nong Tang” (alley) in the Designer Retreat.
Carrying my luggage up the wooden staircase which cried squeakily with every footstep, I told myself to expect nothing fancy and could only pray for a clean set of mattress and sheets. Boy, I was thoroughly mistaken.
Not only the apartment was spick and span, it came with a bundled surprise – an artsy terrace with generous amount of sunshine.
它安安静静地坐落在静安区的古老弄堂间。它的公共楼梯间已被时间踩得嘎吱作响。它的外表也平庸得让人很容易就忽视掉它的存在。但就是这样的小弄堂里，有着这么令人惊艳的小天地。
The bamboo fence is a genius design. It is not only a piece of art that quietly integrates with the surrounding, but also a natural ventilator.
特别喜欢这个用竹子圈起来的阳台，既有隐蔽感，也巧妙地解决了采光与通风的问题。在这里看看书、喝喝茶，连时间也仿佛会为你停驻呢。

Sheets and mattresses that are as clean as star hotels
勤更换的床上用品与浴巾。卫生条件可媲美星级酒店。
Fresh towels, hairdryer, robes, slippers and start-up toiletry kits… you name it, they have it.
They also impressed me with small but thoughtful gestures like this – a stack of taxi cards for guests who do not speak in local tongue. Further, the apartment is centrally located in the heart of Jing An District, nested amongst old Shanghainese Nong Tangs and artsy bars and within walking distance to the Jing An Park. This is a place full of untold stories and memories. Wished I had more time in Shanghai!
虽说硬件的考量很重要，但往往最轻易打动人心的是那些细心的服务与小举动。就好比房东为不能说华语的访客所准备的地址卡，方便访客与司机交流。这间民宿的地点非常好，在颇有老上海情调的茂名路上，并与闻名遐迩的南京路与淮海路交错。傍晚时分散步到静安公园，体验一下闹区中一小片绿洲，无疑是份享受。

The second place was a studio apartment in the Shanghai French Concession area, a smaller but equally fun place to stay in, be it temporarily, or eternally for that matter. Because the sense of time seems to be irrelevant when you are with the right company.
What is “French Concession”? You might ask. It is a French settlement established in 1849 (and terminated in 1943), when the then-French Consul obtained a proclamation to concede residential and commercial activities for the French without interference by the Shanghainese government. The Shanghai French Concession is the largest of the 4 French concessions in China (the other 3 can be found in Tianjin, Hankou and Guangzhou). Years of redevelopment did not wash away the distinctive French character ingrained in the architectural style. Undoubtedly, it has become a popular tourist destination today.
第二件民宿也是非常有特色，它位于黄浦区法租界的一条隐蔽的小巷子里。不高的居民楼，却有个公共小花园，瞬间使其显得别有洞天。
什么是“法租界”？
它是早期法国人在这个曾是亚洲第一大海港城市内设立的租界，使其居民搬迁至在上海却不受上海当地政府的管辖。当时除了法国，英国也在上海设立了租界，两个国家的租界共延续了100年之久（终止于1943年）。直至今天，我们依然能从建筑风格与历史遗物的痕迹中找到属于那个年代的集体记忆。
The oriental yet minimalist decor adds an element of comfort to this peaceful oasis. The crown jewel in the unit would be no other than the bay window with a garden view.
这是一间独立式的小套间，麻雀虽小，但五脏具全，而且卫生条件不在话下。
大爱房间内的旧式木格子窗台！柔和的阳关洒在窗边的沙发上，伴着院子里的鸟鸣声，远离市井的喧嚣，这是最好的心情沉淀。
